On our way over to the Vatican we stopped by Castel San Angelo. This was a fortress that had a private underground walkway to Vatican City. We went and saw Vatican City. We waited in line for the Vatican Museum. Our wait was about 2 1/2 hours but it was worth every minute. Once we got in the Vatican we looked around in some of the rooms and then decided that we may want to make our way over to the Sistene Chapel in case there was a long line to get in. It was quite a walk through the museum to the Sistene Chapel. On the way there we were able to see a lot of the museum. The painting were amazing. All the hallways were covered with paintings. That includes the ceiling and the walls. A lot of gold paint was used. It was really beautiful to see. The Sistene Chapel was more amazing than we had imagined.
After the Chapel, we had to hurry over so we could see St. Peter's Basilicia (Catheral). This is one of the largest in the world and it was huge. We first went through the tombs of the Popes. We were able see Pope John Paul II's tomb. It was covered with flowers. Next we went up to the catheral. We were there as the sun was coming through the windows. It made the whole place really light up and was really beautiful.
After the Vatican, we went to the Pantheon. This is the only building still intact from Ancient Rome. It was believed that the dome was a perfect sphere. This was now a church. The ceiling had a hole in the roof that let in fresh air and rain. There were small holes along the floor which would allow the water to drain out. We were able to eat in a sidewalk cafe close to the Pantheon and enjoy the sights, sounds, and smells of Rome.
